The primitive streak
WebbThe primitive streak has a continually changing cell population just as the edges of the amphibian blastopore. Ingressing cells are coated with HYALURONIC ACID, (a linear polymer of glucuronic acid and N-acetylglucosamine) which is synthesized by the epiblast cells and secreted into the blastocoel. WebbUp to three separate primitive streaks were seen in a single blastoderm (3/15 cases), each characterized by an accumulation of mesoderm cells, a primitive groove, and discernible Hensen's node. In some cases, however, one or more of the streaks regresses and only one axis develops further.

WebbThe primitive streak usually disappears without a trace. Occasionally remnants may persist in the sacrococcygeal region of the embryo to give rise to a tumor called a TERATOMA. These tumors are more common in females than in males and may become malignant. The tumor appears as an external mass at the base of the spine. WebbEarly in the third week the embryonic disk has enlarged and become pear-shaped in outline, and a well-formed primitive streak occupies the midline of its caudal (hind) half, which is narrower. Cells from the epiblast are passing through the streak and spreading laterally in both directions beneath the uppermost layer, now ectoderm ( Figure Ja, Jb ).

WebbIn the chick, the process of gastrulation is prolonged and highly modified than that of frog and Amphioxus. It is already started when the egg of chick is laid and completes well into the second day of in cubation. The main characteristic of avian gastrulation is primitive streak. WebbThe primitive streak is drawn in red dashed line for perspective. (A) At stage X, precursor cells of the hypoblast (yellow) are present as “islands” of a few cells, with a slight posterior-to-anterior gradient. Thereafter (from stage XI), the islands begin to fuse together in posterior-to-anterior direction to form a sheet.
